Trees and forests are critically important for the survival of many species. They produce the oxygen we breath while cleaning pollutants from our air, clean our water while reducing flooding, and even help our entire planet's water cycle function.
Globally, the timber industry is the 4th greatest driver of deforestation, after beef, soy (particularly livestock feed), and palm oil production.
Wood has been used in construction for about as long as humans have built our own shelters. It is strong, durable, and can lend towards features that make for passive heating/cooling in a building. Old-looking wood can make for rustic or historic looking buildings. However, not all wood can be reclaimed in it's original form for rebuilding, but even sawdust can go towards making durable composite boards for items such as built-in and freely moving furnishings, or flooring.
Wood has long been used for art, with smaller pieces used for items such as frames, pencils, and paint brushes. Wood can also be used directly as an art medium, for example statues, decoratively carved furniture and trimming, costume pieces, ceremonial masks, beads, dolls and puppets, musical instruments, and much more.
Never use chemically treated wood for use in or on your soil.
Bedding used by livestock can then be composted for later use on crops or other plants.
Building materials, fencing, and similar items should not be used as mulch as they contain heavy metals and other toxic chemicals.
Unwanted logs or timbers can be used to help stabilize river and stream banks, edge steep inclines against landslides, or function as steps on a hillside to reduce the risk of people slipping.
Single use products should be avoided as much as possible, but there are situations where alternatives may not be easily accessible of appropriate for every situation. Toilet paper for example, standard toilet paper can be replaces with eco-friendly alternatives such as bamboo or recycled toilet paper.
Wood can be processed into charcoal or used as other types of biofuels. Thought not as clean an energy as renewables like solar or wind, this can sill be a better choice than natural gas or other fossil fuels.
Be aware that heavily-treated woods can release toxic chemicals, increasing health risks such as asthma and cancer in those who breath the fumes.
Burning used wood waste is generally better than burning freshly cut lumber.
