Ghost Gear is particularly deadly type of aquatic pollution. Usually found in the ocean, but also present in rivers, lakes, swamps, and other aquatic ecosystems.
Ghost gear usually consists of plastic including ropes, netting, fishing lines, lobster pots, and various types of traps. Ghost gear can also include other dangers including lead weights and sharp fishing hooks.
Ghost gear can take hundreds of years to degrade and break down, meaning it can kill for hundreds of years if it is not cleaned up. Each year countless animals are accidentally entangled, and often their thrashing or rotting bodies attract new victims into the deadly trap. Many whales and dolphins show signs of entanglement, or worse, wash up dead with ghost gear wrapped around them.
3:42 minute explains what 'ghost' gear is, why it's a problem for humans and wildlife, as well as what is being done about this growing problem.
Ghost gear can cause major harm to reefs, not only in killing off the fish and mammal inhabitants, but also through physical damage (especially during storms), and via disease.
Whales, dolphins, seals, walrus, and manatees are at particular threat from ghost gear entanglement.
"Manatees are one of many animals negatively affected by marine debris. Manatees can become entangled in discarded fishing gear or consume plastic trash—similar to what we’ve seen in other animals like turtles, whales and sharks. Entanglement can even lead to amputation of manatee flippers. A 2017 study showed that over 20 years, 11% of deceased manatees studied had ingested trash or shown signs of entanglement." - Ocean Conservancy
Effective Ghost Gear Solutions (PDF) "This report was commissioned jointly by the Global Ghost Gear Initiative® (GGGI), Ocean Conservancy, and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to showcase progress preventing harm from ghost gear globally.1 It outlines a path forward that builds on existing successful projects and capitalizes on the energy and expertise of the many individuals, organizations, and governments determined to alleviate the problem of ghost gear. The report:
Summarizes current global understanding of fishing gear loss, causes of loss, and negative impacts of ghost gear;
Describes effective best practices implemented around the world to address the problem in successful projects; and
Identifies policy and practical steps needed to continue progress on reducing harm from ghost gear worldwide.
The GGGI Best Practice Framework for the Management of Fishing Gear (BPF) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Voluntary Guidelines on the Marking of Fishing Gear (VGMFG) are highlighted as guiding principles that “come to life” in the hands of creative and passionate people from diverse backgrounds, organizations, and governments. Case studies illustrate programs that work and showcase strategies proven to reduce harmful impacts of ghost gear. Each successful case study was uniquely developed for a specific location, fishery, or community with wide cross-sectoral stakeholder involvement and particular attention paid to fishers’ roles.
There is much more work to be done, certainly. This report lays out a path for progress at different scales, highlighting what can be done by the many fisheries stakeholders. We hope this document inspires and galvanizes even more progress on this critical issue for our ocean."
