There are several ways in which water impacts our energy resources, and ways in which our energy impacts our access to water. This page will help lay out some of these issues and how they impact one another as well as other aspects of our world.
Pumping water costs us a lot more energy than most people realize. On the flip side, we use a significant amount of water to produce our energy. This includes water used for fracking and other parts of the petrochemical industry. As fossil fuel suppliers produce more energy, they in turn pollute more of our water, and create greater water scarcity.
Fossil fuels, specifically oil production uses an astonishing amount of water to produce energy.
In addition to using up large amount of water and polluting aquatic ecosystems with spills, fossil fuels are the primary contributors to climate change, and global warming. Climate change contributes to higher energy use, while global warming increases evaporation and higher water use.
1:55 minute video talks about the impact that water shortages have on Texas's energy grid, and how extended droughts will negatively impact both energy and economy if funding for water infrastructure isn't implemented.
Farming uses more water than any other human activity. Farmers often use energy to pump water into fields, and a large portion of these crops are then used to feed livestock.
For this reason livestock are a major component of both water and energy use. Livestock pollute water sources, as well as drinking and otherwise using more water than other farming activities.
Tougher regulation, higher fees, ending subsidies and other such steps can help protect us from fossil fuel production, while make fossil fuels obsolete faster. This can help us speed up our transition to renewables.
Clean Water "is working to protect people and communities from oil and gas production's harmful environmental and health impacts while pushing for the transition to a clean energy economy."
