Table of Contents
Food security is a growing issue all over the world, with large amounts of energy required to move food vast distances, and certain areas increasingly cut off by weather extremes. Farmers and consumers are at the increasing mercy of fuel costs or production/shipping chain issues.
Many of these are directories, maps, and finders, but some are specific locations particularly for smaller regions and islands where info was harder to find.
As voted on by the /PlaneteerHandbook community, we use this Continental Map to determine where to put countries and island nations. Countries often listed as Central America are listed in the North America drop down, and Middle Eastern countries are listed under the Asia dropdown.
Please feel free to contribute feedback including any info about farmer's markets that we have missed!
The following are listed from most impactful choice, to less impactful.
It's important to understand that the most important decisions we can make about food should focus on "what we eat" more than "where our food comes from" especially when considering the most high-impact foods.
However, once we have made those adjustments, the next simple thing we can do to both shorten the food chain. By shopping locally and especially via our local farmers' markets we can all help support struggling farmers.
Remember to bring money or crypto, some reusable bags, a reusable bottle of water (some vendors will let you refill with their lemonade and other fun flavors!), and anything else you might need for a successful low-impact shopping trip!
Earth Markets "It is an international network of markets that work in accordance with the principles of Slow Food.
The protagonists are small producers and food craftsmen. They sell only what they produce and can personally guarantee the quality of their products.
On the stalls of the Earth Market there is good, clean and fair food: the products are local, fresh and seasonal; they respect the environment and the work of the producers; they are offered at fair prices, for those who buy and for those who sell.
Earth Markets are places to buy high quality products, but also spaces to build communities, create exchange and education."

The following have helped support farmers and those who help organize farmers' markets. Some listed here might not have specifically given support farmers' markets, but their goals and rules may fall in line with such activities and may still be worth applying to, especially if you plan to have ecological, animal welfare, or human welfare elements included in your project.
A Well Fed World "Apply for a grant to support your plant-based feeding, farming and/or advocacy."
Beyond Animal "Where investors and vegan businesses meet" "Using technology, for online funding, networking and business services, to accelerate the transition to an economy free of animal exploitation. Our vision: a kinder, cleaner, healthier world."
The Pollination Project (TPP) "is a vegan foundation that offers seed funding to grassroots activists working to build a kinder, more compassionate world for human & non-human animals.
TPP focuses on early stage ideas and funds individuals directly. Over the years, they’ve seen the power of bottom-up, community-led grassroots activism. Through “pollination philanthropy”– a democratic model of peer-to-peer decision-making — TPP works with a global network of grantees, community partners, and volunteer advisors to identify extraordinary project leaders who, due to the grassroots nature of their work, are often not in a position to receive funding from other foundations or institutions.
They make micro grants 365 days a year to grassroots global change agents and have a growing global community of 4,500 grassroots leaders in 150 countries. They support vegan outreach projects around the world, and have a special program for farmed animal activists in Brazil, India and Mexico. Their goal is to offer not just seed funding, but capacity-building support and connectivity with other activists working in the same geographic or issue area."
Pro Veg Grants "We offer financial and training support in vegan advocacy and meat reduction efforts through grants, which fund work to reduce and eliminate animal consumption and through our skill-building accelerators, which offer advocates the skills they need to manage effective organizations and campaigns."
Vegan Society "The Vegan Society Grant is open to individuals and grassroots organisations. It exists to support projects which will encourage non-vegans to go vegan and stay vegan. There is no maximum grant, but a typical award is no more than £1,000."
VegFund "offers grants to help you do just that! VegFund accepts applications for funding outreach in three areas: Community Events, Special Projects, and Online Campaigns."
