We can probably all benefit from improving our communication skills in general, but when it comes to activism and outreach, these skills can make the critical difference between successfully inviting others into action, vs driving them away or even creating new enemies.
In addition to making sure we communicate well, it's important to choose appropriate types of activism for the subject of our concerns and the changes we want to invoke.
"Intersectionality is the idea that all social justice issues — namely race, gender, and class, as well as environmental justice — are connected. Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw created the term in 1989, according to Vox. She introduced the term intersectionality in an academic essay titled "Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Antiracist Politics." For the paper, Crenshaw centered her analysis around Black women to highlight their experiences, as well as the ways society erases Black women's experiences — for example, by focusing on the most-privileged group members in race and sex discrimination cases, thereby marginalizing Black women and other "multiply-burdened" people, as Crenshaw noted in the groundbreaking essay.
Even though the term has been in use for more than two decades, the idea has exploded in recent years. It became much more prevalent in the modern climate movement during the summer of 2020, when Leah Thomas, Diandra Marizet, Sabs Katz, and Phil Aiken founded the Intersectional Environmentalist (IE) platform." - Green Matters: Intersectional Environmental Activism
These were originally "Organization" sections on various info pages, which grew too large and or which overlapped with multiple topic pages. We now have them listed here by topic or sector.
Farm animal sanctuaries not only provide shelter, love, and medical care for abused or abandoned livestock species, but they can also be amazing places for educating the public about both animals and our food choices.
Bike advocacy groups are essential for helping to make communities cleaner, safer, and more sustainable. They can work alone or with other organizations to help bring awareness to the public, help reduce local emissions, educate novice riders, and help students get to school. They often advocate for more dignified accessibility for all community members - not just those who ride bikes.
The groups and programs listed in this section may or may not be charities or non-profits themselves, but each is dedicated or inclusive in their support of said organizations. If you want to use their services, you may be required to provide legal evidence of your group's status, such as a tax ID number to prove that you are a legal charity or non-profit.
