Many species are threatened because they are directly targeted, they are accidentally caught or poisoned, or because they relied on a targeted species for survival in one way or another.
Entire ecosystems can be damaged or even destabilized by poaching and hunting.
When parrots, elephants, and primates disappear, so does seed dispersal, resulting in entire forests losing their biodiversity.
Coral reef suffer more immediate damage from fishing equipment, and the use of cyanide to knock out exotic fish for peoples' fish tanks.
When pollinators such as butterflies are used to make souvenirs for tourists, this creates ripples all the way up the food chain while also threatening the plant species that rely on those pollinators for reproduction.
Carbon-based life forms are build using carbon, and this carbon is released back into the environment when these organisms die or become extinct. Loss of trees, kelp forests, and seagrass meadows means a drastic drop in Earth's carbon sinks, but loss of animals is a part of the same equation. Each organisms not only represents a specific volume of carbon storage within their bodies, but their very life process - feeding, breeding, and breathing are examples of the very complex carbon cycle that has evolved on our planet over millennia.
In addition to hurting local species in local eco systems, some ecosystems are also vital migration routes for endangered species. When endangered species pass through improperly protected areas, they run the risk of being shot, trapped, or otherwise blocked from their seasonal feeding, breeding, and nesting locations.

Local communities that are given reliable information about wildlife are more likely to protect those species instead of destroy them. Education can start with children at school, but education access for farmers and other parts of society can also help turn the tide against extinction.
Dogs can help humans find and track down poachers to protect many different species from endangered turtles to rare rhinos.
Planet Wild: Dogs on Turtle Patrol "Sea turtles in Cape Verde are under threat. Even today, they’re being illegally hunted for their meat. In times of hardship, loggerhead turtles were a vital food source for the local community. Nowadays, it has become more of a delicacy. Even though stricter laws have been implemented, there are still enough people paying good money for poached loggerhead meat, which is bad news for the turtles."
"Our partner organization, Fundação Tartaruga, is on the ground in Cape Verde training dogs to protect loggerhead sea turtles. These dogs learn many important skills, like how to detect suspicious behavior in the dark and how to hunt down turtle poachers by smell. They’re specialized in tracking and catching poachers so they can be handed over to the police."
Turtle Foundation "We and our local sister organisation Fundação Tartaruga have been running the conservation project on Boa Vista since 2008. Thanks to consistent night patrols on the beaches, the number of poached animals has been reduced enormously. In the first year alone, the number of animals killed on Porto Ferreira beach fell from 600 (2007) to 60."
