Protecting and maintaining human rights means we protect our access to things we've had since before human history began. We maintain our health and happiness, despite the whims of overreaching governments and selfish corporations.
Human rights are fundamental entitlements inherent to all individuals, regardless of nationality, sex, ethnicity, religion, or any other status. These rights are the bedrock of human dignity, pivotal for the survival, freedom, and development of every person.
Historically, the recognition and protection of human rights have evolved through centuries, hampered by political regimes and corporations prioritizing power and profit over human welfare. However, the objective remains clear: safeguarding these rights enables the preservation of health, happiness, and overall quality of life.
International charters and treaties such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) underscore the global consensus on what constitutes fundamental human freedoms and protections. By upholding these rights, societies can ensure just and equal access to essential resources and freedoms that are critical to personal and collective well-being.
Around the world, human rights are under constant threat from oligarchs, powerful corporations, entire industries, fascism, and dictators. No sooner do we gain rights, such as the right to vote (for women and minorities) and feel like our fight is over, then radical groups and corporations seek to remove those rights or they find other ways to attack human rights and dignity.
This may feel like a never-ending, or even a pointless battle, but each time we win, we gain historical precedence against inequality and abuse. Those of us who have solved these issues can then help spread them to places that are suffering without them with support and roadmaps to success.
Human rights encompass a broad range of entitlements that are essential for the survival, dignity, and liberty of individuals. Below are several key human rights that are pivotal to maintaining the quality and sanctity of daily life.
The following are listed in order for approximately how important they are to survival and daily life quality.
Clean air is vital for human health. Without it, respiratory diseases and other health issues can arise, severely impacting quality of life and even leading to premature death. Ensuring access to clean air involves regulating pollutants and protecting natural resources.
Water is fundamental for life. Safe and clean drinking water supports overall health, hygiene, and well-being. Issues like water contamination and scarcity can lead to significant public health crises, making it imperative to maintain and manage water resources diligently.
The right to adequate food is critical for health, development, and survival. A lack of access to nutritious food can lead to malnutrition and long-term health problems. Food security initiatives and sustainable agricultural practices are necessary to uphold this right.
Adequate housing means a place that is a reasonable size. We investigated this topic and found that the "right size" can be different for different people, depending on their family size or if they live along, and other factors. Ensuring that homes being built are "the right size" can provide a variety of benefits including better mental health, increased socialization, less material and energy waste.
Construction waste makes up anywhere from 10% to the majority of an area's waste stream, depending on various factors. When an area is frequently hit with catastrophic weather events (thanks to climate change), the rate of waste from buildings being built, destroyed, remodeled and rebuilt increased dramatically. With this in mind, individuals, companies, and communities need to focus on building and rebuilding with the environment in mind, using eco-friendly building practices and materials, including reclaimed construction materials.
Human dignity involves respect and ethical treatment. Recognizing and protecting each person's inherent dignity and worth is fundamental to human rights. This includes safeguarding against torture, inhumane treatment, and discrimination.
The ability to move freely, both within and between countries, is an essential aspect of personal liberty. Restrictions on movement can oppress individuals and limit opportunities for employment, education, and personal development.
