Science and activism boost one another.
Firstly, science informs us of which actions to take, then the science behind those actions helps bolster public and political trust in these actions.
Over time, scientists and activists can use scientific methods to analyse their own work, and its impact on the topic at hand. From there new strategies and solutions can be devised, further strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of our activism.
13:15 minute video helps show how science can not only help track down the sources of environmental problems, but help us find sustainable solutions, and even bolster support for (sometimes expensive or complex) solutions.
The inclusion of science in our problem solving can help us forge new avenues that other communities can replicate with confidence and clarity. This becomes increasingly important as climate change and species loss accelerates globally, allowing us to act more quickly in the face of increasing dangers.
The action plans are based on scientific data as well as local feedback and priorities, then the suggested actions and pathways can be enacted upon by those same communities with the help of resources such as government funding.
Climate action plans can include topics such as fossil-free transportation, a shift to more sustainable energy production, fire reduction, agriculture practices, sustainable water management, and coastal defenses or climate-related migration or managed retreat.
Many people are hesitant to act, because they believe the commonly touted myth that "nobody cares" and nobody is doing anything about climate change!" This belief impacts the public, politicians, and corporations alike, but isn't actually based in fact.
This website alone should stand as a testament to the millions of people making tackling climate change and pollution a part of their daily lives. Click the Climate Opinions Data button to learn about what science says on the topic of people's beliefs and concerns surrounding these topics, as well which solutions already have a stunning amount of public support, even if politicians haven't enacted them yet.
Agriculture currently uses almost 1/2 of the Earth's habitable surface. Farming uses more water than any other human activity and practices such as land clearing further disrupt the water cycle. While modern agriculture isn't the biggest producer of greenhouse emissions, it is among the top 4 sectors that scientists say we need to focus on to bring emissions down to sustainable levels.
"To advance the field and address spatial disparity in reporting, we propose the establishment of country-specific networks of monitored and data-driven experimental rewilding projects, focused on national contexts. We also propose that the concept of standardizing the assessment of rewilding success across sites should be approached with caution, considering the site-specific and self-defining nature of rewilding outcomes. Lastly, we emphasize the importance of careful consideration by practitioners in terms of large herbivore refaunation efforts in Europe. Implementing comprehensive long-term plans to manage herbivore populations and address unforeseen effects is essential to mitigate welfare concerns, overgrazing, and reputational risks, while also maximizing biodiversity gains." - Science Direct: A Scoping Review of the Scientific Evidence Base for Rewilding in Europe
BeeOdiversity 🐝 "BeeOdiversity’s mission is to innovatively and scientifically develop projects that regenerate biodiversity by combining the brilliance of Mother Nature, technology and the involvement of all the players concerned. Take our BeeOmonitoring solution for instance: a tool that measures pollutants and the state of biodiversity based on the cleverness of bees and data interpretation software. These measures then allow you to change things for the better." "We provide measurement tools, advice and nature-based solutions to make you a reference for biodiversity and pollutant reduction."
Water Ranger App 💧 🚨 Helps you monitor and map water quality in bodies of water that may not receive any testing or legal protection otherwise, due to lack of funding or environmental staff around the world.
