Curtains and blinds can help keep your home or business more comfortable year-round while also helping to reduce a building's energy needs.
Curtains can also help reduce light pollution, and increase indoor visibility by bouncing light back indoors.
An extra layer between the front or top fabric, and the backing or black out lining isn't required, and it can make curtains or blinds heavier and more difficult to install or handle, but it is excellent for providing additional protection against extreme outdoor temperatures in both summer and winter.
Use curtains and/or blinds, with white or pale backing to reflect heat. There are special layers for making insulated curtains including blackout lining which can reduce energy costs and temperature fluctuations in both the summer and winter. They are a little expensive up-front, but highly effective in making your home more comfortable.
Blackout lining is especially good for insulting with heat and cooling in mind, though it it specifically intended to protect against light pollution.

Basic Lined Curtains
This 15:03 minute video shows the basics of making lined curtains with a fabric that repeats (if your fabric doesn't have a repeating pattern, then you don't have to buy as much to make everything match). To increase the insulation properties, you would want to add a third layer inside, for example a plain interlining, flannel, quilted fabric, and/or thermal lining.
