Table of Contents
This page is specifically for organizations and their projects which are focused on re-wilding.
Rewilding differs from conservation which focuses on keeping things as they are (a snapshot in time, often of severely degraded land passed down from ancestors who didn't realize the harm they were doing to the land or biodiversity), while rewilding focuses on increasing biodiversity by creating new or healthier biomes, rich with species who may be in decline or who have vanished from the landscape for decades or even centuries.
While this is intended to be a more concentrated directory of groups focused just on rewilding, rather than traditional conservation, we also have to include a section listing specific types of ecosystem. The groups on these pages may be focused on recovering damaged ecosystems, or creating new ones, where the sea floor or other spaces have been wastelands for some time.
Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme-funded Restoration Landscapes Projects "are harnessing natural processes to demonstrate replicable ways of bringing back nature and restoring degraded landscapes."
Planet Wild "Our community funds monthly rewilding missions that bring back endangered species, clean up our oceans, and rewild entire forests 💚"
The Rewilding Institute "We live for the day when Gray Wolves and Grizzly Bears have connected habitat from Mexico to Alaska, when Pumas have reclaimed their homelands East and West, when salmon and other migratory fish swim freely up and down our continents’ rivers, when the oceans are teeming with whales and sharks, and when all native species regain natural patterns of abundance and distribution."
Sahara Conservation "exists to conserve the wildlife of the Sahara and bordering Sahelian grasslands, together with the diverse landscapes required for its survival of the region’s embattled fauna and flora."
Justdiggit "uses nature-based solutions to regreen degraded landscapes.
Together with farmers, inhabitants and local partners, we revitalise ecosystems at scale by bringing back trees, digging bunds and implementing grass seed banks. It’s how we help build climate-resilient communities, increase biodiversity – and eventually cool down our planet. Want to join us in our mission? Dig in!"
Planet Wild "Kenya’s soil faces huge problems as global temperatures rise. With longer droughts and unpredictable rains, large areas of the land have become so dry and damaged that they can hardly support any life. Plants and grasses are disappearing, putting both communities and wildlife at risk. Luckily, there is a way to restore the degraded soil — and it’s surprisingly simple."
Sahara Conservation "exists to conserve the wildlife of the Sahara and bordering Sahelian grasslands, together with the diverse landscapes required for its survival of the region’s embattled fauna and flora."
Planet Wild "Located in West Africa, Senegal is home to an abundance of unique animal species and habitats. The country is home to four major ecosystems; forest, savanna grassland, freshwater, and marine and coastal. However, for decades Senegal has been battling desertification, growing poverty and the impact of climate change. The country’s lush forests in particular have been hard hit, losing an area the size of Malta (40,000 ha) annually to agriculture, firewood, and building materials."
"Grassroots organizations are transforming desert landscapes into lush forest gardens. In our latest mission we partnered with Trees for the Future in Senegal who are planting a diversity of native trees, shrubs, vegetables and plants."
Planet Wild "We are implementing a new rewilding method and help an orphaned sun bear to find its way back into the wild."

Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme-funded Restoration Landscapes Projects: Iron Curtain to Greenbelt "The formerly closed border between Bulgaria and neighbouring Greece and Turkey, from the Rhodope mountains in the West to the Black Sea in the East, is one of Europe’s biodiversity hotspots, hosting 81 IUCN Red List species. It is the stronghold of the national breeding population of eastern imperial eagle and is frequented by vultures, wolves and jackals. The area has been degraded by forest conversion, ploughing, and climate change causing an escalating number and increased intensity of fires. The project will replace coniferous plantations with natural riverine and deciduous forests, and restore water sources and grasslands to create a thriving ecological network that supports species recovery."
Rewilding Europe: Rhodope Mountains "Rhodope Mountains is the most important breeding area for griffon vultures in Bulgaria. The whole region is also a stronghold for wolf and jackal."
Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme-funded Restoration Landscapes Projects: Mura-Drava-Danube "are harnessing natural processes to demonstrate replicable ways of bringing back nature and restoring degraded landscapes."
Rewilding Europe: Velebit "This dramatic mountain chain, right on the Adriatic coast in Croatia, is one of the wildest areas of the whole Mediterranean. A region where wild nature is really coming back.
Velebit is one of the most prominent natural areas in the Balkans and situated on the Adriatic coast of Croatia. It hosts two national parks, a biosphere reserve and an array of old-growth forests, deep canyons, ancient open lands and exciting wildlife like Balkan chamois, red deer, brown bear, wolf and lynx."
Grazelands Rewilding "is committed to restoring wild European landscapes with more biodiversity. The key lies in landscapes where we as humans no longer intervene with machines, but where natural processes are guiding. And where large grazers work in the rhythm of nature, in other words Grazelands!"
Lolland
Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme-funded Restoration Landscapes Projects: Mura-Drava-Danube "are harnessing natural processes to demonstrate replicable ways of bringing back nature and restoring degraded landscapes."
Planet Wild: Harz National Park Forest "In our third mission we partnered with Harz National Park to turn things around and help transform this stressed ecosystem into a strong and climate resilient forest. With the help of our community we planted a total of 5,000 deciduous trees between the deadwood to ensure the new sprouting forest was future proof.
This rewilding strategy helps the Harz fight back against climate change, propagating a diverse mix of seeds deep into the forest floor over the coming years and rebuilding the ecosystem over time."
Planet Wild: Little Owls "For our fourth mission we traveled to the Nuthe Nieplitz region in Germany to give the Little owl a fighting chance to return. The region was shaped by state-operated mega-farms during the GDR that destroyed the landscape's rich biodiversity. Since German reunification, organization’s like LFV-NNN have stepped in to bring it back." Nesting Boxes for Little Owls
Planet Wild: Oder Delta "The Planet Wild community funded the creation of new breeding grounds for fish in two of the Oder’s tributaries: the Ina and Gowienica rivers. This was done by replenishing the river beds with gravel. Alongside new breeding grounds, the method improves oxygenation, water cleansing and supports new habitats."
Planet Wild: Return of the Lynx "The Eurasian lynx is Europe’s largest wild cat, known for its distinctive spotted fur, incredible senses and shy nature. They were once widespread throughout Europe, commanding territories up to four times the size of Barcelona, but habitat destruction and fur hunting meant the wild cat has been completely extinct in Germany and other parts of Europe since 1850. In mission 7 we ventured into the Harz National Park to bring them back."
Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme-funded Restoration Landscapes Projects: Mura-Drava-Danube "are harnessing natural processes to demonstrate replicable ways of bringing back nature and restoring degraded landscapes."
Casa dei Pesci "is a nonprofit association, formed in 2012. Our mission is the protection of the marine environment.
In our action, we were inspired by the work of Paolo Fanciulli, Paolo the Fisherman, an artisanal fisherman and environmental guide, who has been fighting for the defense of the sea of the Maremma for over forty years.
We intend to develop projects for the conservation and protection of the marine environment, using art as a means of raising public awareness.
Our projects are mainly aimed at the sea of Maremma, but our message does not want to stop there!
The Association wants to set itself up as an example of good practice both nationally and internationally."
Planet Wild: Underwater Sculptures in Italy "Casa dei Pesci held a month-long event where artists created five new marble sculptures. Alongside these, protective cement blocks were dropped off the coast to protect sea life from bottom trawling. These blocks are specifically designed with holes to provide marine life with new homes lost to harmful fishing. Thanks to the incredible support of the Planet Wild community, five sculptures and 40 protective blocks have been added to the coastline, helping to keep Posidonia and the ecosystem safe."
Sharklab Malta "is a Malta-based NGO working to protect elasmobranchs in Meditterranean waters. Our main objectives are to raise awareness about sharks, skates and rays, increase research efforts, and contribute to conservation on all levels. We are a registered non-profit organisation run by a committed team of volunteers."
Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme-funded Restoration Landscapes Projects: Danube Delta "are harnessing natural processes to demonstrate replicable ways of bringing back nature and restoring degraded landscapes."
Rewilding Europe: Danube Delta "Where the mighty Danube river meets the Black Sea, it has created a massive delta land, Europe’s largest wetland area. It is still surprisingly wild and relatively undestroyed."
Planet Wild: European Bison "Thanks to your help, we were able to use technology to help Poland’s bison thrive. Your membership helped ZTP purchase and equip a herd with three GPS tracking collars, and pay for a thermal camera crucial to spotting bison in the wild — despite their size, they’re masters of camouflage!"

Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme-funded Restoration Landscapes Projects: Iberian Highlands "are harnessing natural processes to demonstrate replicable ways of bringing back nature and restoring degraded landscapes."
Planet Wild: Spain Coral Cleanup "In our second Planet Wild mission we partnered with Coral Soul, an organization fighting to save Spain’s La Herradura coastline from the discarded fishing nets and plastic suffocating the ocean floor."
Rewilding Europe: Iberian Highlands "The Iberian Highlands spans the two autonomous communities of Castilla-La Mancha and Aragón, where land abandonment and depopulation has been an ongoing trend since the 1960s. This has encouraged the comeback of deer, wild boar, mouflon, small groups of Iberian ibex and an abundance of Egyptian and griffon vultures; but the top predators – the Iberian lynx, Iberian wolf and Brown Bear – remain absent from the slopes.
Livestock farming and hunting continue to have a strong – but decreasing – presence throughout the landscape and nature tourism is an expanding sector throughout the Iberian Highlands. The high levels of biodiversity and low levels of human disturbance provide promising conditions for nature tourism to play a greater role in diversifying and strengthening local economies."
Rewilding Europe: Swedish Lapland "Sápmi – is a unique blend of untamed nature and cultural heritage. Here old-growth forests, mountains, glaciers, free-flowing rivers and extensive wetlands co-exist with the indigenous Sami community since millennia. There is no other place in continental Europe with such vast, uninhabited, road-less and original landscapes as Swedish Lapland."
Planet Wild: Rewilding Power Lines "We’re using the space under power lines to reconnect fragmented areas and create more biodiversity. By converting these barren spaces into flourishing meadows of biodiversity, we can provide a sanctuary for native plants and endangered species."
Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme-funded Restoration Landscapes Projects: Danube Delta "are harnessing natural processes to demonstrate replicable ways of bringing back nature and restoring degraded landscapes."
Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme-funded Restoration Landscapes Projects: Polesia "are harnessing natural processes to demonstrate replicable ways of bringing back nature and restoring degraded landscapes."

England
Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme-funded Restoration Landscapes Projects: Cumbria Connect "Cumbria, a county in the North-West of England, is home to some of the UK’s most prized landscapes which provide habitat for rare species such as red kite, melancholy thistle and European water vole. Over the centuries, intensive land management approaches have unintentionally caused the landscape to become degraded and fragmented. The plans for agricultural transition following the UK’s departure from the EU have created a unique opportunity for stakeholders to work in partnership to transform this landscape. The project will seek to build a consensus for nature restoration in this renowned upland landscape that, in turn, will help to underpin a sustainable local economy."
Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme-funded Restoration Landscapes Project: Solent Seascape "The Solent, one of the most heavily used waterways in the UK, is composed of a complex network of harbours, islands, spits, estuaries and vast sandbanks. These threatened habitats provide refuge to a range of ecologically important and threatened species including the thresher shark and critically endangered European eel, as well as a wintering ground for over 125,000 ducks, geese, and waders. The Solent Seascape Project will reconnect the Solent into a functioning seascape by improving the condition, extent, and connectivity of key marine and coastal habitats using protection and restoration initiatives. This in turn will create habitat for fauna such as nesting seabirds and fish, and allow the area to contribute further to carbon sequestration. This innovative project is one of the first of its kind in the UK to initiate seascape level recovery."
Scotland
Cairngorms Connect "is a partnership of neighbouring land managers, committed to a bold and ambitious 200-year vision to enhance habitats, species and ecological processes across a vast area within the Cairngorms National Park."

American Prairie "Our mission is to create one of the largest nature reserves in the United States. This will serve as a refuge for people and wildlife, forever."
Planet Wild: American Prairie "For thousands of years, Indigenous Americans lived in balance with these rich ecosystems. But the arrival of European settlers brought sweeping change. Wildlife was hunted nearly to extinction, the land was fenced off and the vibrant habitat was turned into a monotonous, farmed landscape, stripping away the wild beauty that once defined this region. That’s why we’ve teamed up with an innovative conservation project that could bring back the wild beauty of America’s forgotten grasslands."
