Headwaters are the little-known-but very important segments of waterways which eventually combine to make full sized streams and rivers. Unlike large or major rivers, headwaters are generally not included under river or waterway protections.
This lack of knowledge about headwaters and lack of legal protections are both contributing to the pollution and damage they receive, causing major repercussions further downstream.
Virginia
Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR) and the Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) "team up together to offer the Headwater Stream Initiative. This program is designed to provide FREE technical assistance, project design, materials, and labor for the planting of native trees and shrubs on qualifying properties in the headwater counties of the Rappahannock River Watershed including: Rappahannock, Fauquier, Culpeper, Madison, Greene, and Orange Counties."
Texas
Guadalupe Riverkeeper "A non-profit organization at the Headwaters of the Guadalupe River – Kerr County, Texas working towards sustainability of our Guadalupe River and Edwards Aquifer."
The National Trust: Freshwater Community Grant Fund "Grants of £500 to £5,000 are available for initiatives that create, look after or improve local freshwater habitats and provide opportunities for people to connect with nature."
