They indicate the health of their marine environment for issues such as pollution, overfishing, and habitat degradation.
Especially ghost nets and other abandoned or lost fishing gear.
By switching from fossil fuels to electric power, boats, ships, and ferries become much quieter, and run without the annoying (sometimes nauseating) vibration associated with fossil-powered engines.
Active transport such as rowing and paddeling are very healthy for humans, but they also allow us to be much quieter around wildlife. This isn't a great solution for long-distance travel, or dangerous weather, but it creates opportunities for amazing memories that won't deafen our marine cousins or potentially harm them with fast-moving propellers.

When retouting isn'tpossible, slowing ships, boats, and ferries helps protect marine mammals from deadly collisions.
"The Amazon river dolphin, also known as the pink river dolphin or boto, lives only in freshwater. It is found throughout much of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela." - World Wildlife Fund
These are the only known predators of killer sharks. Killer whales are often thought of as one species, but they are actually several groups with different cultures and genetic lineages. In recent years they have suffered greatly from starvation and still born calves because of overfishing of their favorite fish species. PFAS, plastics, and other pollution has also hurt them.
Can live for 50 years in pods of up to 100. Their biggest threats are net entanglement and other interactions with the fishing industry, pollution, and habitat loss. They are listed as a species of "Least Concern", but their numbers are declining in some places where they are now considered "Near Threatened".
Whale and Dolphin Species Guide "There are around 90 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises, known collectively as "cetaceans". From the enormous blue whale to the tiny vaquita and Hector's dolphin, you will find information and amazing facts about many of these incredible creatures in our species guide."
Atlas of Marine Mammals "A new initiative to compile basic distribution data for Namibia's marine mammals. Note that records of seals are not submitted here, but through the Mammal atlas."
Mammal Mapper "is a free app where you can record signs and sightings of mammals in the UK. Mammals can be recorded along a route whilst you’re walking, running, cycling or even a passenger in a car, or as one-off sightings, for example a hedgehog in your garden."
Spyfish Aotearoa 🐙 🦈🐟 🐠 # 📷 "Our team deploys baited underwater cameras in marine reserves all over Aotearoa New Zealand to monitor the abundance and diversity of marine life.
Help us identify and count the species of fish recorded by the cameras. Your classifications will be used to determine the effectiveness of the reserves, inform marine management, and protect our taonga (treasured) species."
Dolphin Project "is a non-profit charitable organization, dedicated to the welfare and protection of dolphins worldwide. Founded by Richard (Ric) O’Barry on Earth Day, April 22, 1970, the organization aims to educate the public about captivity and, where feasible, retire and/or release captive dolphins."
The National Marine Mammal Foundation (NMMF) "is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization recognized globally as a leader in marine mammal science, medicine, and conservation. Our team of experts is answering critical questions about the health of the world’s marine mammals and our shared oceans."
International Marine Mammal Project "For 40 years, the International Marine Mammal Project has led the fight to protect dolphins, whales and the ocean environment. We have achieved victories for marine mammals around the world and work to make the oceans safe for whales, dolphins and marine life. We are a proud project of the non-profit Earth Island Institute, headquartered in Berkeley, California USA."
Sea Shepherd this organization's "sole mission is to protect and conserve the world’s oceans and marine wildlife. We work to defend all marine wildlife, from whales and dolphins, to sharks and rays, to fish and krill, without exception."
Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) "is the leading global charity dedicated to the protection of whales and dolphins."
The Wild Dolphin Project "is a non-profit scientific research organization that studies and reports on a specific pod of free ranging Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis). Since 1985, Denise Herzing has been studying dolphin communication in the wild. Objectives of this long-term, non-invasive field research on wild dolphins are to gather information on the natural history of these dolphins, including dolphin behaviors, social structure, dolphin communication, and habitat; and to report what we have learned to the scientific community and the general public."
International Marine Mammal Project: Save Japan Dolphins "Every year, in Taiji, Japan, dolphins are chased into a small cove and butchered in the most horrific and cruel way imaginable. The hunts are subsidized by the dolphin captivity industry, which pays top dollar for a few “show quality” dolphins that are ripped from their families. The rest of the pod is killed for meat laden with mercury and PCBs. Most Japanese don’t even know the hunts exist. The Japanese government supports the dolphin killers and denies any health issues."
OSPAR "is the mechanism by which 15 Governments & the EU cooperate to protect the marine environment of the North-East Atlantic.
OSPAR started in 1972 with the Oslo Convention against dumping and was broadened to cover land-based sources of marine pollution and the offshore industry by the Paris Convention of 1974. These two conventions were unified, up-dated and extended by the 1992 OSPAR Convention. The new annex on biodiversity and ecosystems was adopted in 1998 to cover non-polluting human activities that can adversely affect the sea.
The fifteen Governments are Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.
OSPAR is so named because of the original Oslo and Paris Conventions ("OS" for Oslo and "PAR" for Paris)."

The Eckerd College Dolphin Project (ECDP) was initiated in 1993 to conduct research on bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Tampa Bay. The project was started by Dr. John Reynolds and is now led by Dr. Shannon Gowans and Dr. Peter Simard. Multiple students work year-round on a variety of projects investigating questions about the population, social structure, ecology, distribution and acoustic behavior of bottlenose dolphins."

Galveston Bay Dolphin Research Program (GDRP) "a partnership between the Galveston Bay Foundation and the Environmental Institute of Houston, aims to better understand the dolphins that live in Galveston Bay, with a focus on upper Galveston Bay. Primarily through boat-based surveys, the GDRP studies the ecology, behavior, and health of this population. The GDRP also raises awareness about dolphins through various outreach and education initiatives."
Amazon River Dolphin Conservation Foundation (ARDCF) "a registered 501c3, supports local efforts to protect a storied species and its rainforest ecosystem. Building upon the wisdom of Amazon traditions, practices and beliefs with findings from modern conservation biology, ARDCF works to preserve the river dolphin from the corrosive pressures of outside, usually foreign interests that threaten the survival of the dolphins and their world. The fates of dolphins and people have been entwined for millennia. ARDCF promotes healthy, natural interactions between dolphins and people that protect both animals and people, sustain local culture, and transform visitors to ardent Amazon conservationists." These dolphins are found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela
