In addition to being able to choose organic and biodegradable materials, they can be cleaned and reused for a very long, time, reducing their ecological footprint over single-wear masks, and they can be cleaned along with general laundry.
Drying generally makes up the lion's scare of your laundry footprint, so consider hanging your masks to air dry on a rack or out in the sun to reduce energy use. A bonus benefit is that avoiding the drying machine can add years to the lifespan of clothing and items such as cloth masks.
