In countries where wood fire stoves are common, switching to more efficient stoves, can drastically reduce deforestation and can reduce living costs by around 1/3rd.
The following cooker types have been listed from most energy efficient to less energy efficient. Their impact on indoor and outdoor air quality are also reflected in this organization choice.
"Induction stoves are up to 10 percent more energy-efficient than conventional electric smoothtop stoves and about three times more efficient than gas stoves. And compared with gas, they’re better for indoor air quality." - Consumer Reports: Pros and Cons of Induction Cooktops and Ranges
"Induction cooking appliances give you the best of both worlds: They blend the instant response time of gas with the easier cleanup (and environmental benefits) of electric appliances. Induction stoves also boil water faster than either alternative, and they’re safer too, because you can’t heat up a burner without a pan in place. Induction cooktops and induction ranges generally outperform every other kind of cooktop in Consumer Reports’ tests. In fact, nearly every model tested in our lab delivers fast cooktop heat and superb simmering." - Consumer Reports: Pros and Cons of Induction Cooktops and Ranges
While these are a bit different from stoves, and are limited as far as where and when they can be used, they are listed here because they are a cleaner cooking option than fuel-efficient fire stoves.
6:04 minute video explores how recycled metal and a ceramic lining can help save African households money, improve their health, and help reduce local greenhouse emissions all with one item.
The type of energy used to fuel stoves can help increase their benefits. This section discusses some types of "fuel" and how they can impact efficiency and other ecological factors.
The following are listed (to the best of our ability) from most eco-friendly to least.
There are two ways of producing biofuels.
One is to use fossil fuels, pesticides, and other chemical inputs to grow and process crops into biofuels, which has been found to be less sustainable than just using fossil fuels more directly. In addition scientists and environmentalists warn that entire industries such as aviation relying on these types of biofuels would result in greater levels of deforestation to keep up with demand.
The other type of biofuel is that made from waste. This can include "crop residue" such as banana peels and corn husks, or even kitchen waste.
Natural gas stoves have been shown to create hazardous levels of indoor air pollution while in use, but continue to leak methane even while the range is not in use or turned on.
Mukuru Clean Stoves "we repurpose locally sourced waste metal to manufacture improved, efficient, and reliable cookstoves and the we partner with local women business owners to distribute to the last mile.
Since 2017, we have sold over 400,000 clean cookstoves in Kenya, enabling families to make savings of over $50 Million in fuel costs while impacting the lives of over 2,000,000 people who now benefit from cleaner air within their homes while avoiding over 800,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions."
