Fireflies are important bioindicator species, telling scientists where pesticides, light pollution, deforestation, and other factors have caused critical damage to eco-systems. Fireflies feed on other insects including pest species - making them a beneficial insect in a variety of ways.
Fireflyers International Network an international group of firefly scientists and enthusiasts. They have citizen scientists from around the world gather vital data to help protect these important insects. The different branches of Fireflies International are listed in each region's Group listing.

Ce programme s’articule autour de deux volets : les études scientifiques et la sensibilisation. Ce projet vise à déterminer les causes du déclin des insectes lumineux au cours des dernières décennies et d’améliorer l’état des connaissances sur les lucioles et les différentes espèces de vers luisants."
