Zero-waste shops help communities find package-free alternatives, buy second-hand and refurbished items instead of new. All of which helps reduce emissions and reduces the staggering amount of resources we use, such as water, metals, and forests.
The businesses and groups on this page are listed by location and alphabetically. The Bulk Groceries, Zero Waste Supplies, and Second-Hand shops or shops selling refurbished items are listed together, since there is often overlap between what any one business sells.
Some shops in this directory are bulk shops offering grains, flours, spices, and more without excess packaging. They encourage customers to bring their own containers, but will often have a spot where customers can donate unused containers for other customers to use if they don't have their own, or don't have quite enough for their current shopping trip.
Refurbished items are generally second-hand but may be items that never got sold, or may have been through many owners.
Refurbishment refers to repairs, repainting, or in the case of furniture, then it generally means the piece was stripped down and recovered with new materials.
Refurbishing uses more resources than un-altered second-hand goods, but uses less resources and produces less pollution than sending items to landfills or incinerators and making new items from virgin materials.
Reupholstering furniture (especially antiques) can expose workers to dangerous chemicals and heavy metals such as mercury and lead. So it's best for work shops to use proper protection and adequate ventialion. However this industry is a good way to employ skilled workers who can help protect our environment and reduce landfill over-use.
These allow people in the community to donate or sell unwanted items, and others to buy them at discount prices. Second-hand items and refurbished items help us reduce the need for mining, deforestation, and factory-related pollution. You can usually get items package-free.
These may be comined with groceries or not sell any food items at all. They generally focus on zero-waste and low-waste products. For example bamboo or recycled toothbrushes, safety razors (which only need the metal blades replaced instead of entire razors or razor heads), washable period supplies, washable nappies/diapers, composters, and more.
The businesses and groups on this page are listed by location and alphabetically. First by continent according to this map (as voted on by r/planeteerhandbook users), then by country, then by shop name.
