The right to privacy or right to be left alone, is an ever-evolving concept with historic roots. The concept often focuses on the rights of law-abiding citizens to be left alone by over-reaching governments.

Some countries, such as the USA don't have particularly strong privacy laws, which leaves people vulnerable to corporations and politicians who may seek to abuse their access to our data.
For those of us who still use paper or receive physical mail, it's important to open all envelopes, and shred or otherwise destroy key information including names, addresses, account and identification numbers, etc. Many recycling pick up services won't accept shredded paper in mixed recycling bins, but your community may offer services or special recycling days for bringing in or picking up sensitive documents for shredding and recycling.
