Cooling centers and similar resources can mean the difference between life and death, especially for children, the elderly, anyone with disabilities, and especially for people without homes or shelter.
There are many ways we can keep our homes and neighborhoods cooler, but with the growing number and frequency of heatwaves, extreme weather and other issues that knock out power, communities need to provide and have access to cooling centers more now than ever.
Unfortunately it can be tricky to even know where our local cooling centers are, especially since some are only cooling centers during emergencies, and there may be inadequate broadcasting of this life-saving information.
This page is intended to help you find your closest local cooling center.
If you don't see any for your area, it may be because your region doesn't yet offer this type of service, and so it may be to everyone's benefit to advocate for such places, or else we may simply be missing the info for you area.
Please let us know on r/planeteerhandbook on reddit if there's anything we need to add.
If your community doesn't already have a cooling center, pressuring your local government to open one may help save many lives. Here is a PDF on Use Of Cooling Centers offered by the CDC.
Article explains how retrofitting buildings and converting unused city spaces could help reduce climate change impacts on the local population.

Daytime Cooling Centers/Aquatic Centers "A daytime cooling center is an air conditioned facility where residents can temporarily go during periods of extreme temperatures. Few to no services are provided beyond what is normally available in that location. Vulnerable populations such as children, seniors, and people with chronic conditions can benefit from time in an air conditioned facility during extreme heat periods. Free transportation to/from daytime cooling centers will be available during extreme heat incidents. Riders need to inform the driver they are going to or from a cooling center. Please visit the 2021 Daytime Cooling Centers page located under the Programs and Services tab of our website to see the cooling center locations in your area."

If you don't have air conditioning, find a cool place to visit nearby, like a friend’s place, a mall, museum, coffee shop, library, or an NYC cooling center. When it's not scorching out but it's still hot, you can also cool off at parks, areas with shade, sprinklers, or pools."
