Rock gardens or rockeries are a type of garden that focus on plants which don't need a lot of soil to grow. They can help support rare or even endangered plants, and support wildlife even in harsher climates. Alpine, desert, and even bog plants can do well in these gardens. The rocks can serve as natural mulch that doesn't break down like plant-based mulched, which can make them appropriate for fire-prone regions. The rocks can also help store heat during cold weather, protecting plants from frost. In addition to helping plants, rocks can provide ideal sunning spaces for animals such as butterflies and reptiles.
